Cold Fronts is an expressionistic rendering of the ambient anxiety and melancholy feelings that diffuse as days grow dark from fall to winter. A collection of new pieces by Planning for Burial, Bryan Manning (Bosse-de-Nage), Drowse, and Jonathan Tuite (The Flenser), the album is an uncommonly cohesive work that induces immersion when experienced in full. Planning for Burial’s Thom Wasluck had the idea for the synthesizer heavy project because he was fascinated by the fragments of modular composition found on recent Bosse-de-Nage records, and longed to hear more from Manning. He brought Drowse and Tuite into the fold knowing both were experimenting with similar palettes. Drowse’s Kyle Bates was taking recordings of the Moog IIIP and Buchla 100s at The Center for Contemporary Music, while Tuite had recently realized his own modular system. The four artists set about working in the waning months of 2020 through early 2021, unconsciously in tune with one another, turning the weighted isolation of that time into sound. The synthesizers at the heart of Cold Fronts were fitting instruments for this transposition, drawing audible frequencies from the same voltages used to warm our homes and keep our lights on.
